Previous workshops

Catherine can offer the following workshops for individuals or group bookings.

 

An introduction to feltmaking

This one day course introduces the materials, processes and skills needed to make felt. It is practically based with an experimental approach to feltmaking techniques.

The course covers: Materials and equipment needed; Demonstrations and instructions; Design ideas Surface decoration – during and after the process using colour, threads and beads.

Students will begin by producing a flat piece of felt incorporating their own design ideas. Consideration will be given to the surface decoration before and after the process using colour, shape and thread.

Needle sculpting using fibres

This course shows how to create 3D and base relief figures and shapes using just fleece and a barbed needle. The course is practically based with an experimental approach to feltmaking techniques.

The course covers: materials and equipment needed; demonstrations and instructions; design ideas; surface colour, pattern and texture.

Felted Vessels

This course shows how to create felted 3D containers around moulds of varying shapes and sizes. It is practically based with an experimental approach to feltmaking techniques.

Gossamer scarves

Learn how to create fine felt that drapes beautifully. The felt is soft and light weight with an open lacy effect. Learn how to incorporate a range of unusual fibres to give your work added texture luxury.

Working with layers

Learn how to create pre-felt layers of fibres and fabrics that can then be combined with base fibres and one another to create larger images or 3D pieces with depth and luminosity.

Learn how to use a resist to create a seamless 3D shape which can turn into a bag or a beret!

Felt it, finish it

Catherine Slater and Linda Dewart have joined forces to offer you the chance to develop your feltmaking and decorative techniques.

The much-talked about embellisher – an electric machine with barbed needles which can speed up aspects of felt-making and create stunning surfaces – will be available to try.

Day 1 Leading tutor: Catherine Slater

Learn how to create lustrous lightweight pieces of soft felt that will curve and drape around you.

Day 2 Leading tutor: Linda Dewart

Learn how to cut and fit the felt onto a model’s dummy. An embellisher is used to create a seamless wrap, scarf or collar with added detail. A variety of techniques to create a truly individual piece will be demonstrated.

Both tutors will be available on each day
